A Line in the Landscape

Located on rottnest island, this eco-lodge focusses primarily on the dynamic history of the sand dunes. Having spent three days, studying the site and its surrounding, it became apparent that the topography was a key factor to the design. The dynamic nature of the sand dunes along with the panoramic view of the ocean added an ephemeral touch to the site. Hence, the concept of 'a line in the landscape' was created. Rather than overpower the site, the project blended into it, acknowledged, and empowered the existing conditions. Along the line, are rooms and a restaurant with direct views on the ever changing dunes and ocean. Simple timber frame construction was chosen not only because of its cost effectiveness and limited damages to the site but also because they age with time and as time goes by they will slowly become an intrinsic part of this particular site.

Courtyard living

The development is not only an attempt at creating more opportunities for interaction between the residents and the local neighbours but also at redefining Coogee as a livelier place. The concept revolves around a central coutyard space which provides a platform for social interaction. By emphasizing more on the outdoor quality of the project, an attempt was created at encouraging people to get outside their apartments and learn to know their neighbours. In addition to the central courtyard, a roof top located on the northern block provides a recreational space for the inhabitants. Whether its a birthday party, a barbeque among neighbours, or a place to sunbath with the view on the park, the rooftop is open for a wide range of activities. while timber lattices are used as sun shading devices on the balconies, louvres in the apartment blocks allows for cross-ventilation and passive cooling.

museum and seed bank

This project is a provocation based on establishing a livelier and more nature oriented city. The 'what if perth city becomes a jungle city' scenario explores the possibilities and potentials of connecting the city users to nature. The urban strategy consists of inserting green pockets at specific locations in the city to act as points of relief. The pressure points being mainly based from the rule book. Located opposite the iconic town hall on barrack street, the poject is a combined seed bank and museum. Its insertion will set the standards of the future developments predicted in the rule book. The project reflects the city's vision through the insertion of green pockets on various levels. the roof garden, not only provide a platform for diverse australian plant species but also provide a viewing deck overlooking the swan river.

Goderich affordable housing

Located next to the Perth mint, the goderich street affordable housing is split into three categories; public housing, apartment blocks and a commercial space. The scheme revolves around a series of public, private, and semi- private spaces, all of which are defined by a single ribbon that forms the spine of the aparmen blocks. While the public courtyard acts a picnic area, playspace and an place to interact, the private courtyard offers a garden where residents can grow their own food. The circulation space of the public housing runs discretely along the rear of the apartment block, unobstructing the view of the central courtyard while also allowing a decent privacy level for the residents. Pockets of air through the apartment blocks allow for proper ventilation and offer the opportunities for occasional encounters and interaction.

The introverted cube [A.Quach + R.J.Lee]

This project is an attempt at creating a universal structure that would fit in any site across WA. The introverted cube has been developed after a series of experiments that aimed at maximising the important aspects of the site. The simple symetrical layout results in an easy set up, a cost effectiveness, and offers the best option in terms of capturing views( facades can be interchanged easily). The roof acts as a funnel and harvests rain water that will be used for the toilet. Also, the roof is angled at a 15 degree pitch to maximize solar gain to the photovoltaic cells that will run the multiple lights. The water tank which features in the gallery addresses the importance of water conservation and entertains when it is overflooded.
